If this type of garbage is not bad enough the “reputable” publishers like the Yellow Pages are out there doing damn near the same thing. My uncle owns a business and told me about a meeting he had with the sales guy from the Yellow Pages and the sales pitch was not much better. Until the majority of users becomes more savvy this shit will proliferate and honestly I don’t think it will ever go away.

The sad thing is that it must actually still work or people wouldn’t be doing it. I think instead of a “paid links” report, there should be an “idiot scam” report feature in Google.
