Friday Tea Time (Pre-PubCon Edition)

by TheMadHat on November 30, 2007

If you're new here, you must subscribe to my RSS feed, or I will hunt you down. Thanks for visiting!

Two more days before I’m on a plane inbound to Vegas. I’ve been drinking heavily to prepare my liver for the onslaught. I’ve got a line on a couple parties but I haven’t had time to research when and where a lot of them are going to be. Send me an invite and you get a free review of whatever site you want. (party invites for links…does that count?)

I will also be giving away some black hat prizes for cooperation next week. So when you see me, just do what I say and you’ll be in the mix for several cool tools to play with. Anyway, on to the post party from this week.

    * Matt talks about snippets…BORING! Actually the point here was he mentioned that they still use ODP for some information. WTF? Still using ODP? I have one of those bag cell phones from the 90’s but that doesn’t mean I still use it. That’s about the only thing he says other than plugging Google shit so don’t bother watching unless you don’t know how they get the snippet and if you don’t go somewhere else.

    * Here is a great post I missed earlier this week from Andy Beard on the different ways to take advantage of popular blog posts to spread around some link weight. Similar to the siloing concept but after the fact. Good stuff and a must read for all bloggers out there.

    * A humorous but completely true post from the master himself about building “natural” links and using nofollow. (Disclaimer: I buy links for rankings [Disclaimer 2: I buy them naturally]) This whole paid link nofollow brainwashing nonsense has gone on long enough. Get over it already, quit looking at your PenisRank, and just continue doing what works.

    * Via Philipp Lenssen - become immortal with Google. Or maybe Google is immortal and there can be only one.

    * David has a great rundown on the pros and cons of social media. He covers all the basis by playing the devil. I mean devils advocate or something. Entering the social media game is sometimes a tough decision to make.

    * John calls out SEO’s around the planet. Quit being a curmudgeon. He also agrees the paid links brainwashing snow job experiment should be done with and manages to bash Wikipedia at the same time. I love it. The mice already know the answer to paid links is 42. Enough already.

Big List - Search Marketing Blogs I was informed this morning that I finally made the coveted BIGLIST and that my hat is black. It’s not black Lee, it’s just Mad :( So without further ado, let’s point out some sneaky stuff. Now black hats don’t post as often since we’re they are out making money so this might go back a couple weeks. And just to be clear, I’m probably more on the n00b end of BH compared to most of these folks.

Matt, you should go ahead and stop reading now.

    * Earners Blog gives us the Dark Side of affiliate marketing (as though there is a good side or something). All of these are sneaky (and slightly shady) ways of letting others do your work for you. Getting there is hard but the rewards can be large. Except for the domain squatter thing, I wouldn’t even go there.

    * Remember Matt’s claim that there is no such thing as undetectable cloaking? Well who gives a fuck if you can detect it when it works. Rob busted TagSum.com for cloaking and although they turned off the jump, it’s back on now so you can see it in action. Filthy spammers.

    * From a “slightly” shady SEO (I’m going out on a limb and saying really shady) we’ve got link building techniques that go well beyond paying for them. And it’s faster. Step 14 and 15: XRumer and trackback flinger.

    * Get tossed from AdSense yet? I haven’t but I don’t think it will be long. (Don’t worry, I’ve got backups). WageRank gives the lowdown on one I haven’t used yet but plan on it now. Let’s call it MFP (Made For Peakclick).

    * Interweb Gold (for some reason I think pissed off cats are funny):

That’s it. I’ll be arriving in Vegas on Monday around 3:30 and heading to the Wynn. You can direct message me on twitter and I’ll be posting updates there on where I’m going. If you don’t know what I look like, I’ll probably be wearing some MadHat paraphernalia. I’ll for sure be at the SEO Poker Tournament and hitting any private parties I get an invite to. Like I said, free links for invites. Forget chocolate, I’ll give you links ;)

Monkey Balls In Louisville Kentucky

by TheMadHat on November 28, 2007

Just because I can. And so can you! For ONLY fourteen installments of $1,997.99 you can rank at least 4th for phrases like “Monkey Balls In Louisville Kentucky” and wedding favors that express who you are! Act now because this offer will only last 10 minutes from the time you read this.

If you live in the Louisville Kentucky area and you sell Monkey Balls…well what the hell are you waiting on? How about wedding favors that express who you are? What the hell does that mean anyway? If Joe “Article Expert” Palladino ever gets married and/or re-married, I think I’ll send him some dried up monkey balls…or even a douche bag because that essentially expresses who he is.

Hey Matt, why are you so concerned with black hat idiots that can’t even get a PHP script to work instead of slime ball scammers that use your search engine to steal money from unsuspecting mom and pop storefronts? Oh wait…cause that doesn’t cost Google anything does it. In fact it probably makes you some money from his AdWords account. Don’t be evil…

Friday Turkey Time

by TheMadHat on November 23, 2007

In honor of the turkey that I spent 19 hours cooking in my smoker (it was a big turkey), we’re doing turkey time today. I’ll continue with last weeks theme of giving you the gems by category in my feed reader. I believe we ended that Tea Time in the code category, so let’s move on to…the conference category!

    * PubCon is fast approaching! I’ll be arriving on Monday the 3rd and departing on Saturday the 8th and staying at the Wynn. Who’s going to be where and who’s having the best private party that I should be invited to in exchange for constant promotion from me ;). Anyway, the final agenda is up so if you still haven’t signed up for it do so quickly. The Wynn is sold out so you’ll have to stay somewhere else but you’ll get at least one free drink from me so you’ll save money. I’m also really excited about the Moniker domain auction. It will be my first to actually attend.

    * On the contextual side, the big news lately has been the drop in earnings. Earners Blog ran a poll and gHacks has some tips on handling the change. My revenue and CTR have actually gone up this month, but that may be an anomaly since it’s a small data set.

    * Domaining. I’ve been meddling around in this area for about 8 months so I’m still a n00bster but I’m starting to get a little better at it. First DirectNavigation.com reported that .EU domain use is up 23% during the third quarter. I like to see ccTLD’s use increase as I’m betting on .US being quite popular. And I’m not just betting for fun on that one.

Michael Gilmour from Whizzbangsblog.com has helped me tremendously getting started in this industry. Not personally, as I haven’t had a chance to meet him yet, but just from his blog alone. He has published outstanding information about the industry and strategies he uses. If you are looking to enter this space, go there first. His recent posts on Domaining 101 are the first you should read and if you subscribe to one domaining blog, this is it. See Domaining 101 - Part 1 Business Models, Part 2 Buying Domains, and Part 3 Buying Traffic Domains.

Let’s talk about the Registrant Search tool from Jay Westerdal (if you don’t know, this allows you to look up all the domains that have ever been associated with the queried name). When it was released there was a major outcry about privacy issues and a few other things. I am on the side of it being removed. It reminds me of the leaked AOL data to some extent. Having my portfolio open to public view to anyone isn’t something I like at all. Having the ability to look up example.com and find out I’m the owner is okay, but being able to look me up and find out everything I own is not at all. To his credit he has asked for comments on the issue on whether he should or shouldn’t keep it running. Take it down Jay. I know I’m a nobody in the domaining world right now but I’m still going to weigh in.

    * Okay, enough domaining talk. I’ve just been on a domain kick lately. Let’s jump to the general category. Spotted via (Allen Stern) TechCrunch reports a rumor of LinkedIn getting gobbled up by NewsCorp. I’ve always been a fan and regular user of LinkedIn so I hope getting taken by the giant conglomerate won’t change the people and philosophy behind it.

Jeremiah Owyang has a nice post on using social media to give feedback, and in a real world example from this week, Daver reported seeing a quick response from LinkedIn to a twitter conversation. Cool stuff.

    * Interweb Gold: LolCat Builder. ROLFCOPTER! (spotted this via Point Oh)

    FireFox

That’s all for Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks for all my readers and to Dave, thanks for the thanks!

Hulu And Airwolf - An Unstoppable Force?

by TheMadHat on November 20, 2007

NBC Universal and News Corporations online video distribution channel Hulu is now in private beta and low and behold I snagged an invite. Sexual favors go a long way nowadays. Before we get into the actual service, let’s discuss the domain name. Great four letter CVCV (consonant, vowel) domain with a huge brand potential. IN THE UNITED STATES! As the never wrong Michael Arrington reported last month, Hulu means “butt” in Indonesian and Malay and more ironically “cease” and “desist” in Swahili. I can see it now: “Click here to embed this Butt video onto your blog”. You would think that an organization with the resources NBC has would have considered this. I guess maybe they did but just didn’t care since they are only after the English speaking world. (Oh wait…here’s a line from the invite email: “Our intention is to make Hulu’s growing content lineup available worldwide over time.”) Oops.

Airwolf Season OneNow, on to the service. First of all, they have the entire first season of Airwolf so they automatically get an A++ from me. I know what I’m going to be doing Thanksgiving Day. Airwolf marathon. Hulu also has the A-Team, but I can only stand so much “pity the fool” in one hour.

Quality - Hulu bills itself as a video portal with “professional content” (so it won’t be competing directly with YouTube). This obviously improves the overall quality of material on the site. After watching an episode of Airwolf and a few SNL skits last night I could certainly see a difference in their platform as well. It has a significantly improved quality and feel to it in comparison to YouTube. On top of that I had no bandwidth issues. Only once did it stall and buffer but I was also downloading a SQL database on my other machine so I didn’t see any problems that I normally have on YouTube (remember we’re in beta, so there are a limited number of users). It’s still not where I think it should be on resolution and quality, but since they have Stringfellow Hawke it gets a slight grade bump. Quality Score: B+

Selection - What? Are you listening? All you need is Airwolf and this thing will be bigger than YouTube. But in case you might like to watch something else, they have quite an impressive lineup. One surprising thing was their movie selection. There weren’t a large quantity but I wasn’t expecting any. I (quickly) counted 31 shows that currently have new episodes on the air and around 90 shows that were either on a break or discontinued. And yes Vanessa, I know you have it already but Buffy Season One is there. The only strange thing was that the entire NBC lineup wasn’t available (ER for instance). This may have to do with some sort of contract issue or some stupid rights management thing but I expected the full line. Overall a great selection of mainstream material. Selection Score: B

Advertising Noise - 15-30 Second Advertisements every so often. I watched one full length episode of Airwolf and there were 5 shorter ad spots in around a 50 minute show. In a 21 minute Simpson’s episode there were 3 ad spots. More annoying is the recurrence. I saw the same ad every time in the Simpson’s show. Overall somewhat annoying but better than TV. As for fast forwarding through them, forget about it (insert Italian accent). It’s disabled during the ads. Display ads in other parts of the website were scarce and I only spotted one that was not too distracting. Ad Annoyance Score: B-

Social Media - Without the ability to upload video from the lowly amateur video creators (aka: their customers) it destroys most of the viral potential it would have had. It takes advantage of some aspects of social media as they do allow users to rate, review, and vote on material and they have your standard profile of likes, dislikes, viewed videos, and rated videos. They don’t have any social networking functionality at all. No “follow a friend” or “Battlestar Galactica Group” to speak of (again, this could be in the works or something). They barely pass this category, and that’s only because they have a profile creator. Hopefully they’ll come up with something to add to it. Social Media Score: D-

Marketing - I’ll let someone else handle that one. They have good traditional media partners which could help or hinder them. They’ve got MySpace on board using their platform so that’s probably a plus if MySpace doesn’t screw the pooch somehow.

Overall I like the service. If it remains free I think I will probably be a regular user of it because my stupid Time Warner cable DVR screws up all the time and misses the last 10 minutes of my shows. Overall Grade: B-

WAIT! A++ because they have Airwolf! Here is an example of their embedded player with a funny SNL skit. Enjoy.

Friday Long Island Iced Tea Time - 11/16/07

by TheMadHat on November 16, 2007

Friday Tea Time is back. This week I’m taking the best posts you may have missed from each some categories in my GoogleBorg Reader. Here are the gems I found while guzzling large quantities of alcoholic beverages this week:

    * Let’s begin in the Affiliate Marketing category. You think comment spam is bad, here comes Subscriber Count Spam 1.0 from CashQuests. Google may as well just close down. We think of ways to spam them a lot faster than they think of ways to stop us.

Also check out a great post from Dosh Dosh (give yourself at least 20 minutes) on content development strategies. Not only that but I like all the visuals he puts in his posts and he’s one of the best at writing copy you can scan through using bold text. I bow down to his superior blogging skills!

    * Next up? Analytics baby. One of my favorite things and one of my most hated things. Over at the Grok they explain how to measure visitor engagement and provide us with some tools and tips. A lot of the metrics I found were common sense stuff I’ve already got on my “metrics sheet”, but there are also a few things I’ve never even thought to measure. Scanning Visitor Share and Committed Visitor Share for example. Great stuff again guys.

Still not paying attention to the power of social networks? Well you better wake up and smell the Bloody Mary. The younger crowd now prefers social networks over web based email services in the UK. This trend will occur in the US as well and we all know who the money spenders are going to be soon enough. Check out the details at the hitwise house.

    * Black hat time. W00t! Here’s a post that’s not really black hat but comes from SEO Black Hat so I’m allowed to include the SEO Theory of Everything. Well said and about on the mark. Steps 1 and 2 could be interpreted in about 42 different ways…making the answer 42. Still.

This is some shady shit, and one that falls beyond the realm of black hat SEO to the realm of illegal cracking but you should be aware of compromised wordpress installs. Stuart at Earners Blog gives you the scoop.

And the best for last…I don’t know if it was this week or last, but whatever. The Kaptain launched K5 which I immediately signed up for and it kicks ass. I haven’t implemented it on anything yet but will this weekend. I also am a beta tester for Datapresser from Rob at Seocracy. Talk about making black hat available to the public…it’s as easy as making cookies. I’ll be hammering on it this weekend as well. It’s like a black hat party weekend! 7h47 r0xx

    * Bloggin time. Great post over at Blogtrepreneur on how to correctly start advertising on your blog once you’re more popular than me. Not only does he tell you how, more importantly he tells you why so you actually learn something. Another interesting post from Chris Garrett on the definition of authority. Here’s my definition.

    * Spotted via WorkBoxers is a little motivation on funding your new venture. I’ve run into this a lot and it’s always great to discover new sources on the subject. Want some more motivation? Just Do it already!

    * Time for teh code category. Now Vanessa…Everyone deserves to get laid. Except for Matt ;) Cool Green PC, let us know if it works decent, I’d like to buy a few. To all you advocates of a single sign on…Think Again.

    * And everyone should have seen this, but in case you didn’t out came the Sphinn Awards part I and the Sphinn Awards Part II. Good stuff guys. I never win anything. Dammit.

    * Interweb Gold: Mathematical Representation of Rap Music With Charts and Graphs (Sort of Safe for Work)

Okay, so I’m really busy and it’s really late and I only got through six categories. Maybe I’ll do the next six next week. If you’re lucky you fellow keyboard wielding geeks. Off to the bar!

Free Blog Advertising With EntreCard

by TheMadHat on November 14, 2007

EntreCardYes, yet again I’m going to try an untested widget on my blog as I’ve done before. I spotted this post on Shoemoney today. This has always been a concept I’m interested in but it never seems to work (blogrush, bla.st, etc). I put it up about an hour ago and low and behold, I have my first advertiser already. The affiliate marketing blog (how’s that for a first advertiser bonus!) Building My Empire thinks they will get some traffic from my blog…probably like 3 people but a page view is a page view. In return I get credits put in my account that I can use to advertise on other blogs. You can read about the service more in detail over at Shoemoney. Let’s see how long this one lasts. Anyone taking bets?

On a side note, the Building My Empire blog should make a better looking graphic. The generic one kinda blows. I think the edit profile has a glitch in it (at least it does on my end) that won’t allow you to change your ad or something. That could be the issue.

Oh yea, and here’s the link to EntreCard.
